Until now, individuals who have received a placenta injection even once were considered ineligible to donate blood.
However, it has been officially decided that this blood donation restriction will be lifted around Autumn 2026.
This is an important policy change for those who have been concerned, wondering, “Does receiving a placenta injection mean I can never donate blood?” or “How long will the blood donation restriction last?”
Why Blood Donation Was Previously Restricted After Placenta Injections
Placenta injections (human placental extract products) were previously subject to blood donation restrictions due to theoretical safety considerations.
This restriction was not based on confirmed health risks or reported adverse events.
Rather, it was a precautionary measure based on the principle of taking a cautious approach when even a theoretical risk cannot be completely ruled out.
Please note that this restriction applied only to blood donation and did not prevent individuals from receiving blood transfusions.
Why the Blood Donation Restriction Is Being Lifted
Over many years, extensive clinical experience and scientific evaluation have accumulated. As a result, it is now considered that there is limited medical justification for continuing the blood donation restriction.
Based on this assessment, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) has officially announced a revision of the blood donation restrictions for individuals with a history of placenta injections.

“Placenta Injections Mean You Can Never Donate Blood” Is Outdated Information
Online, you may still encounter statements such as:
“If you receive placenta injections, you can never donate blood.”
“What happens if you donate blood by mistake?”
However, much of this information is based on policies that existed before the current review.
From Autumn 2026 onward, individuals who have previously received placenta injections are expected to be eligible to donate blood.
※ Until around Autumn 2026, the existing blood donation restriction will remain in effect.
※ As placenta injections are biologically derived products, informed consent will continue to be required prior to treatment.
